I love stumbling across scenes like these. For me they are relics of a by-gone era and a reminder of how different life once was – more sedate, a little more refined but certainly less convenient than our modern comfortable existence.

Texture #3: Faded Masterpiece

This image was taken on a bridge in Mill Lane in London. It was originally painted by the local school children in the year 2000. Some of the paintwork is showing signs of decay and added texture, but the hard work of the children remains.

This particular section of the bridge always touches me – the little hand print acting as a signature, like the cave paintings of our fore-bearers. A little masterpiece.

Streets Of London

This week was a little trip down memory lane for me- spanning a few years spent photographing London. First as a visitor, then a resident… no longer a tourist.

As a stranger to the city, I found it easy to spot a photo. Paradoxically, that’s something that gets harder, the better you know a place. I was curious to see if my sense of place had been changed over the years by familiarity.

I do hope that it hasn’t altered fundamentally, and that I have managed to maintain the perspective that I held when I first arrived here. The role of the casual observer, camera-in-hand, is one I hope to play for many years to come.

The Watchers…

One of the first things I noticed about London when I first arrived here a few years ago, was the incredible amount of cctv cameras scattered around- almost one on every street corner. In fact, I think it’s true to say that there are more surveillance cameras in London than in any other city in the world.

It took a little while to get used to it, but it’s reached the point for me that whilst I definitely don’t feel any safer for having them around… I no longer notice them in the way I once did, but the question remains…
